Practice Group Descriptions
Important Membership Requirements
- All Swim groups require an active USA Swimming membership.
- All Water Polo groups require an active USA Water Polo membership.
Swim Groups
Minnow Group
- Eligibility: Swimmers ages 8 and under.
- Description: Coached by FSU athletes, this program prepares young swimmers to begin competing on a swim team.
Dolphin Group
- Eligibility: Athletes ages 12 and under.
- Description: Designed for athletes who have entered competitive swimming later in their development or are learning the core fundamentals. Training focuses on the four competitive strokes, starts, and turns using fun-filled drills in a positive, low-stress atmosphere.
- Key Focus Areas: Stroke mechanics, learning to read the pace clock, understanding training sets, and building basic aerobic conditioning.
Gold Group
- Eligibility: Athletes ages 11–18.
- Description: Designed for swimmers transitioning from age-group swimming to senior-level competition who have chosen to make swimming their primary passion. Athletes will train and compete in senior and junior level meets throughout the year based on age and skill level.
- Commitment: Swimmers and families should be committed to training 6 days a week and participating in USA Swimming competitive meets.
College Group
- Eligibility: By invitation only.
- Description: A professional training group for elite athletes who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and are continuing their focus toward elite-level championship competitions, including the Olympics, World Championships, and National Championships.
Group Advancement Criteria
Moving from Minnow to Dolphin - To transition, the coaches will provide a recommendation to the parents.
Moving from Dolphin to Gold - To transition from the Dolphin Group to the Gold Group, 11 and 12-year-old swimmers must be able to complete the USA Swimming IMX Lineup.

Water Polo Groups
Age Group Water Polo
- Eligibility: Middle school and high school athletes (both new and experienced).
- Description: This program focuses on developing fundamental skills and game strategy. The team is coached by players from the FSU water polo team.
Adult Water Polo Group
- Eligibility: Experienced adult players and masters-level athletes.
- Description: Comprised of experienced players with a strong presence of FSU student-athletes. This group offers high-level training, scrimmages, and competitive tactical play, coached directly by FSU's Head Water Polo Coach.
